Abstract

Financial literacy is often overlooked in the informal education of children, particularly orphans, even though the ability to distinguish needs from wants is the foundation of wise money management. This community service aimed to improve the understanding of orphans in Cikedung Village about prioritizing needs and wants and about basic money management, coinciding with the Muharram orphan compassion event. The method was community education with a fun learning approach in three stages: an interactive presentation supported by visual media, an interactive evaluation in the form of a situation-guessing challenge, and a money-management simulation using play money. The evaluation showed an improvement in participants' understanding. Children who initially regarded everything they liked as a need became able to categorize their spending priorities and to put saving and school needs first. Game-based education combined with hands-on practice can be an enjoyable way to build the foundations of children's financial literacy.
